Day 4: Trains and more tunnels in Switzerland

Oh! My! What a day! We started off super early because mom had a meeting in Zug. We got that done but had a beautiful sunrise drive on the way!

Falling water.
This lake had been hiding behind trees, but I finally won!
See that swoop of ice on the left hand side of this mountain? That’s mom’s first real glacier. I may have teared up! My first good glacier in eight years.
We’ll never get over mountains.
We then got in line for a thing we didn’t know existed until this trip, a train ferry!
Boarding the “ferry”. Do not add water.
We’re on a train. In a car. In the Swiss Alps. Here’s a waterfall.
We never know what to expect when exiting a tunnel.
Right off the train, another glacier. I swoon. 😍
After we leave the train ferry, we head on down the road more until we take another train and see glacial melt.
We land in Zermatt. Home of the Matterhorn. The real one. Not the one at Disneyland with a yeti.
We head up more of this tiny Alpine town in hopes of a glimpse of the Matterhorn.
But took a break and finally stopped at a traditional Swiss restaurant. Had Raclette on a recommendation!
And of course had the fondue! 🫕
And took some time to enjoy a dessert!
But the Matterhorn hid in the clouds. Must be very shy.
We took the train ferry back through the mountains.
Through more stunning landscapes.
We got back to our 150 year old house that we swear is haunted but staff is skeptical. But I captured this image on the way back from the bathroom. Bis schpöter! 🇨🇭

Day 3: Zurich > Lichtenstein > Flums > Interlaken

We’re in Switzerland because Mom’s work sent her over to meet employees and so we hit the road early just to do that!

The Alps slapped us in the face as soon as we left Zurich.
The major thing we noticed besides the mountains was how many tunnels there are. Instead of zig zagging up and down these mountains, they just drill these beautiful holes into them. I wonder if Swiss cheese inspired this idea? 🤔
While we’re planning this trip, Mom thought it would be fun to pop over to Lichtenstein for breakfast and so we did!
The town was very cute, clean and quiet at 7AM.
Pastries at the cafe!
I guess they have glow in the dark chickens here.
Who could ever get sick of looking at these mountains!
We then left for Flums, where Willson Brass is located. Oh darn, a pretty waterfall!
The show room!
The show room with a view!
They don’t currently use this anvil, but they made trumpets 🎺 with it back in the day!
We found this man giving us a demonstration on the anvil.
We were given a catered lunch with the employees of a regional dish called Pizzoccheri.
It was actually super fun to sit at a table with German speakers and some English speakers trying to get to know each other. But the sounds of everyone quiet and spoons hitting the bottom of a bowl of desert was quite funny.
The weather was on and off but when it was on, the views were spectacular.
Who gave Switzerland permission to be this beautiful!?
Dropping into the area around Interlaken.
Can you find the waterfalls?
Our hotel is not too shabby. We’re in the center portion, 5th floor, in the arch on the left.
The view from our room as soon as we stepped in.
The town is what you imagine a Swiss Alpine town to look like.
We capped the day off with dinner at the bar.
With a side of a fancy cocktail.
Bis schpöter 🇨🇭

Day 2: We land in Zurich.

Miles traveled 3,738 by plane

173,828,028 km getting lost trying to find our hotel from the airport.

After getting lost in Zürich with no cell service of WiFi, we finally found the Park Hyatt. Our room wasn’t ready but the staff could obviously tell we were exhausted and planted us on a patio with wine.
So, apparently this car is a big deal and you have clubs of young boys and men that care about spotting these fancy cars. (Side note: the woman on the right spoke no English and we speak no Italian but the universal language of laughing at the absurd made us friends!)
Boys looking at their phones after chasing fancy cars around Zurich
Spicy sweet crunchy heavily goodness. Don’t know the name but we may have procured more for a road trip.
When we were in the plane, the fight attendant said that requesting ginger ale was very American. So much so, that the bottles here even say so!

We were exhausted, so the post is short but we have more planned for today! Bis später 🇨🇭

Day 1: Back together for a different kind of road trip!

Miles traveled:

Me: 250

Mom: 3,000

I took Amtrak to Boston while mom flew in.
She sure is a pretty city.
We woke up and decided to take a ferry to the aquarium. I know, not the first time we have taken a ferry in Boston on this blog. it was slightly choppy but I swear this trip will get better. I pinky swear.
I mean, look at that belly! Don’t you want to rub it!
This fat little penguin reminded me of my wide load of a cat. Also, she didn’t swim, she floated.
Why are penguins so perfect?
The turtle said hi.
Jelly! Don’t touch!
More jellies! These had like an electrical iridescent pulse through them!
Look at the puppy! Could you say no to that face?
So, mom is obsessed with this lobster roll so we had to have it since I don’t live here anymore. I think she made kissy noises at it and murmured, “I love you more than my first born”
We made our way to check in…. Wait, what is this terminal, it’s been awhile?
Oh! That’s right, we’re going to Switzerland for a bit! Chocolate and fondue for days!!!!🇨🇭🍫🧀
Preflight Salty Dogs!
Oh? This is really happening. Switzerland! 🇨🇭 Zurich? Is our meal fondue on a plane?

Boulder Day 4!

Before the pics, we were actually asked at one point this trip, “How did you guys meet?” Intimately.

The sun was shining on the Flatirons!
UC Boulder Buffalo Natural History Museum
Duckbill dinosaur 🦖 🦕
Pterodactyl. Caw caw.
We headed to the planetarium for three shows. Two were awesome. The laser show, not so much.
I was hangry and this was my only option.
So yummy!
Finally, mom got me to a Mexican restaurant to keep me from going crazy.
Yummy!
I love indoor plants. It’s actually an addiction.
The shadows 😍
No plants in the ladies room.
The rug shop tempted us again. But no 12 year old.
Night cap with the cute puppy Sienna.
We met Becca and Jacob on our first night and Lily a little later but we love these people and had to have one last night with them on this trip. We will be back soon. 🥰😘

Boulder Day 3!

We started the day with a healthy serving of fruits and vegetables.
We visited the Museum of Boulder which has a great community curated exhibit on the contributions from Latinx people.
Grandma’s home.
This inspired mom and I to give rock climbing a try. Just kidding. We would never.
But kayaking and snow shoes, maybe.
I may or may not have had too much fun using global data to look at my favorite volcanoes. 🌋🌋🌋
Very Boulder exhibit.
We found a store called Jackalope and we’re fans of this very real animal.
This jackalope provided very good customer service.
On a recommendation, we had lunch at Rosetta Hall that had various food options and it was a fun experience.
Mom had steak first. I had chicken shawarma and hummus. We split a grilled Peruvian kabob thing that was amazing.
This marketing campaign worked on mom. She got a cozy sweater jacket thing we can’t describe.
We stumbled into this handmade rug shop that had the best salesman ever. He had us feeling the various textures of wool and silk.
He just happened to be the cutest 12-year-old going on 13 and will probably run a company or country in a few years.
Another great find was a wine bar and gallery.
It was overwhelming at first but we settled in quickly.
All the art was from local artists.
Walking around and looking at all of this with a glass of wine was the perfect way to close out the day.

Boulder Day 2!

It was a bit chilly so we needed coffee with a little Baileys. We had breakfast too.
We had to twist each others arms to go into a wine tasting room.
We dropped into the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. $2 and three galleries.
This artist was impressive.
Balancing house
Floaty house.
Animals.
The Boulder Dushanbe Tea House. We were told to check this place out but every reservation was booked.
We took a short walk along the creek until Canadian Geese bullied us off of it.
Winter wonderland.
A golden retriever was parked outside a thrift store, so we had to follow him to his owner Pinner.
He set up a music from for anyone to sit and play. It was hard not to smile and two goldens ran around and kids played bad music.
Look how pretty!
Grabbed a pack of Kools for 45¢ and then headed to a Jazz dinner! See you tomorrow!

Hello Boulder, CO

Work sent me to Denver and I thought I’d arrive early and get my mom to come in play in the winter wonderland. She jumped at the chance so we’re in Boulder for a long weekend.

I’ve recently learned that if you need to fly out of O’Hare in winter, pay for the upgrade.
Mom’s flight was late. Mine early. We landed within minutes of each other separated by five gates. Then a gargoyle welcomed us to Denver! 😍
Our beautiful hotel. The Hotel Boulderado.
Mom was excited by the tiniest of icicles!
Our view is mostly stunning. 🗻🏔️⛰️
Mom made a snow 👼🏼
Yes, I will drink the glacier water!
A lil history.
Just a pretty ballerina outfit. We have more adventures planned for today!

Day 6: We kayak!

We headed to our dive shop again for the next adventure!
We’re back with Adam from snorkeling with the addition of Matt for the kayaking.
I love kayaking. Mom has never tried it. Which I think explains her apprehensive pose here.
She was a trooper as Adam paddled her around and jokes were thrown around.
It was at a slow pace and under trees…
… and bridges that Adam pretended to run into to mess with mom.
I am happy on a kayak.
Adam captured mom!
And then me!
Matt snapped us all together.
We visited a statue of King Kamehameha. It’s supposed to be a life-size statue of the 7’ man!
Mom with the boys
My turn!
Mom spotted a dive helmet that will fit a cat perfectly. 😹
Crab 🦀 cakes for lunch!
More good food.
I complimented the hostess’ perfume when we walked in. It was Egyptian Musk. Later, she brought me this tube and said she has a whole vat at home from Morocco and I can have this. I mentioned how nice everyone on this island is and she said the jerks don’t last.
Mom fell in love with the Nene geese and got some time watching them.
The one on the right kept falling asleep and bobbing it’s head up and down. It was ridiculously cute.
I needed one last swim in the Pacific.
We found a stray coconut and played with it a bit.
It was named CoCo. Shocking, I know.
We got help opening sweet young CoCo.
We stumbled across a man feeding a colony of stray cats. Some were sweet and others shy.
‘Til next time Hilo. Aloha 🌺🦐🌋🌈🎃🥰

Day 5: Wandering around Hilo.

First sit down breakfast of the trip and I tried SPAM. I expected the taste but the texture threw me. Would eat again.
First stop of the day was a chocolatier and macadamia nut shortbread maker called Big Island Candies.
They had giant windows into their kitchen.
More of the chocolate store. They were happy to hand out free samples of everything!
The next stop was the Pacific Tsunami Museum to learn how Hilo has been pummelled by tsunamis over the years.
Poor little parking meter.
Mom and I jumped around to create “earthquakes”. Mom’s was stronger.
The Museum was in an old Bank of Hawaii and so we watched a movie in the vault.
The most pretty and happy way to demonstrate killer tsunamis 🌊.
We got mom a lighthouse.
We went to the Lyman Museum next. The Lyman’s we’re missionaries from New England that came to Hilo in 1832. They built a very New England home that we toured, but could not take pictures of. They also started a boarding school in the area.
The actual museum next door had two floors, the first floor had geo and bio history of Hawaii, while the second was the human history.
🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋
I am the magma chamber.
We didn’t need to snorkel after all. We just needed this exhibit.
Bigger fishies!
So many shells!
Look at this chaotic shell that collects shells.
We headed upstairs where I didn’t take any pictures because we had been wanting to learn the history and we were enthralled. From Polynesians settelling over 1,000 years ago, to the kingdom formation and it’s fall, to statehood, to sugar plantations and the formation of pigin. There was so much to take in.
We went for a late lunch or early dinner at Pineapples! Look at the cute detail on top of the building.
This had to be our best meal so far. The Hilo Local Plate.
We split the Pineapple POW for dessert.
It was yummy.
We ended the day with a good visit with Pumpkin. 🎃
